Nestled in Al-Qalzam's mountains and overlooking the Red Sea, the Saint-Antoine Monastery is the most ancient monastery in the world. Set up after the Saint's death, in the 4th century AD, this monastery has remained inhabited for 16 centuries. It includes nowadays a church and a surrounding village having its water supply from the mountain's sources only. The library, on the other hand, comprises of more than 1 700 manuscripts while the church's walls are adorned with exceptional Christian Coptic paintings, among which the most recent dates back to the 13th century but which have however been recently restored. Furthermore, the cave where Saint-Antoine lived in hermit is located some 2 kilometres only from the monastery and where you shall be able to go for a visit on foot. Admire the beautiful landscape below where the panoramic view on the Red Sea and the surrounding mountains are once more very spectacular.
